FINDING THE RIGHT THERAPIST

If you and your healthcare provider have determined that psychotherapy would be a valuable part of your treatment plan, the next step is to find a therapist that’s right for you. There are many different types of therapists who come from different educational and training backgrounds, including psychiatrists, psychologists, licensed master social workers (LMSWs) and licensed counselors. Depending upon their backgrounds, therapists may have different styles. What’s most important is that you feel comfortable working with the individual.

Your healthcare provider and/or your insurance provider may be good resources for locating a therapist. You can ask your healthcare provider for a referral, or you can contact your insurance provider for a list of therapists who may be covered by your insurance.

It is good to remember that it may take time to find the right person to work with you. It’s important to interview potential therapists to learn about the type of therapy they practice and discuss your treatment goals. Click here for a checklist to help you with your search.
